Building Your Personal Brand as a CTO in the Job Market

Your brand lands you the right job

Inkmi is a website for CTOs, VPs of Engineering, senior engineering leaders, and senior developers to find their CTO dream jobs. I am giving tips on salary, promotions and your CTO career on the Inkmi Blog.

The CTO job market isn’t the best. Many CTOs wonder what they can do. In my personal CTO model, there are several factors to land you your dream job. First the names of the companies you’ve worked for. Second the size of the teams you’ve managed. Third the problems you solved. And last, your personal brand. If you have three out of four right, the job is probably yours.

We go into more details about the points one to four in other articles. Today we’ll focus on the personal brand of CTOs - what they stand for. This article explores effective strategies for building and maintaining a personal brand that resonates with potential employers and industry peers.

Today’s competitive tech landscape, having a strong personal brand is crucial for CTOs looking to stand out in the job market.

First find out what you want to stand for. It’s hard to build a brand for yourself if you don’t know what the brand stands for. Are you the executor who can create order in chaos with processes? Are you the cost cutter moving from the cloud to on-premise? Are you the innovator? The developer whisperer with great people skills? Are you the business-CTO who can explain technology best? What are you currently standing for in your company? If you don’t know, go around, ask your peers what they think you’re standing for.

After you know what you want, plan on what it looks like. What skills, behaviors, networks do you need to attain your personal branding? What would someone with that brand do? Be hands-on? Learn new technologies? Get an MBA? Start doing these things. Start referring you yourself as the business CTO. Or the innovator. Just like Nike does.

Now it’s time to expand the brand presence:

• Leverage social media platforms to showcase your expertise • Engage in thought leadership through writing and speaking opportunities • Build a network of industry connections and maintain relationships

Tune your CV on LinkedIn to fit the branding. Don’t lie. But you have done many things in each job. Emphasize those matching your brand, drop those that don’t.

Developing a strong personal brand takes time and effort, but it’s a great asset for you navigating the job market. By tuning your CV, referring to yourself with the branding, consistently showcasing your expertise, values, and unique perspective, you’ll position yourself as a top candidate for exciting CTO opportunities.
